I’m building an AI-native logging app as a personal project. While evaluating backend options, I found myself torn between Supabase and Railway — and soon Neon and PlanetScale entered the picture as well.

This post organizes the latest information as of June 2026 to compare the characteristics, pricing, and use cases of each service.


First, Let’s Define the Decision Criteria

Here’s a rough summary of what the logging app needs:

  • Structured log writes (AI agent traces, user activity history, etc.)
  • Real-time or near-real-time queries
  • Vector search via pgvector (semantic search over logs, similar-incident retrieval)
  • Scalable from personal to team use
  • Keep monthly running costs as low as possible

Let’s evaluate each service against these criteria.


Supabase — The All-in-One BaaS

Overview

A BaaS (Backend as a Service) built on PostgreSQL at its core. Beyond the database, Auth, Storage, Realtime, and Edge Functions are all bundled in one package. One highlight: pgvector is available for free on all plans.

Evaluation for a Logging App

  • ✅ pgvector available out of the box — vector search from day one
  • ✅ Auth and Realtime included — no need to build auth from scratch
  • ✅ Row Level Security (RLS) makes multi-tenancy straightforward
  • ⚠️ Costs can spike quickly when compute upgrades are needed
  • ⚠️ Free plan has tight limits on projects and storage

Railway — The Flexible General-Purpose PaaS

Overview

A PaaS (Platform as a Service) where you can deploy almost anything in containers. Rather than a competitor to Supabase, Railway is more of a complement — its strength is running backend services and workers like Next.js or FastAPI.

The build system uses Nixpacks, which auto-detects your framework so you don’t need to write a Dockerfile.

You pay for what you use. On the $5 Hobby plan, if you use $3 you’re billed $3; if you use $8 you’re billed $8 — the plan fee is a minimum credit, not a cap.

Evaluation for a Logging App

  • ✅ Run FastAPI, Go, or other log collection services directly in containers
  • ✅ Queues (Redis) and workers are managed in the same project
  • ✅ Per-second billing keeps idle costs low
  • ⚠️ BaaS features (Auth, Storage) must be implemented yourself
  • ⚠️ pgvector requires manual extension installation

Neon — The Serverless PostgreSQL Contender

Overview

A database service specialized in serverless PostgreSQL. Acquired by Databricks for approximately $1 billion in 2025, it’s being strengthened as a data platform for AI agents.

Its standout feature is branching — just like git, you can snapshot the database and spin up a test environment for each PR.

  • ⚠️ Unlike Supabase, Auth and Storage must be provided separately

PlanetScale — Enterprise-Grade MySQL/Postgres

Overview

A high-scale DB service built on Vitess, with proven usage at Cursor, Intercom, Block, and other large-scale services. The free tier was discontinued in 2024, signaling a pivot toward enterprise positioning.

Render — A Close Alternative to Railway

Often cited as Railway’s main competitor. You can manage web services, workers, databases, and static sites all in one place.

  • Managed PostgreSQL support
  • Auto-deploy from GitHub

Slightly less configuration flexibility than Railway, but a simpler UI that’s more beginner-friendly.

Other Services Worth Knowing

The five services compared above are effectively the de facto options for PostgreSQL + cloud-hosted + personal-to-startup scale, but depending on your requirements, the following are also worth considering.

Firebase BaaS (NoSQL) Top choice for NoSQL or mobile-first apps. Firestore’s query flexibility is limited for log use cases, so excluded here.
Fly.io PaaS Finer-grained region control than Railway. A migration candidate when global deployment or latency matters.

In summary: if your constraints are PostgreSQL + cloud-hosted + pgvector + personal-to-startup scale, the five services above cover the decision space. If mobile-first, self-hosted, or edge-focused requirements appear, Firebase / Fly.io / Cloudflare become relevant.


Decision Framework by Growth Phase

Even after choosing a service, the right fit changes as you scale. Here’s a rough guide.

Phase 1 — Personal / Validation (up to ~$30/month)

Log collection API  → Railway (Hobby / $5)
DB + Auth           → Supabase (Free)

Prioritize staying within the free tier. Supabase Free’s 500 MB and Railway’s $5 credit are enough to get moving.

Trigger to revisit: Supabase DB approaching 500 MB, or MAU nearing 50K.


Phase 2 — Paying Users / Team of 2–5 (~$50–$120/month)

Log collection API  → Railway (Pro / $20/seat)
DB + Auth           → Supabase (Pro / $25+)

Supabase Pro relaxes backup retention, connection limits, and MAU caps. Start with the smallest compute tier (Micro at $12/month) and monitor.

Trigger to revisit: API response times degrading, or DB compute confirmed as the bottleneck.


Phase 3 — Serious Growth / Team of ~10 (~$200–$500/month)

At this point, layer separation becomes worthwhile — moving Auth to Clerk or migrating the DB to Neon.

DB                  → Supabase Pro (large storage) or Neon Scale (branching + analytics)
Auth                → Keep Supabase Auth or migrate to Clerk
Vector search       → Keep pgvector or evaluate dedicated vector DB (e.g., Qdrant)

Neon’s branching — using a clone of the production DB as a staging environment — becomes genuinely valuable at this phase.

Trigger to revisit: The team starts struggling with DB migration management.


Phase 4 — Enterprise / Compliance (~$500+/month)

DB                  → Supabase Team ($599+ / SOC2, ISO 27001) or PlanetScale Enterprise
Auth                → Supabase Auth + SAML or Auth0 / Okta
Log collection API  → Railway Enterprise or in-house Kubernetes

PlanetScale truly shines when you need write throughput at Cursor or Intercom scale. There’s no reason to start there.

Trigger to revisit: Customers request compliance documentation (e.g., SOC2 reports).


My Conclusion: Supabase + Railway Is the Best Combination

Given the requirements for the AI-native logging app I’m building, this is the architecture I consider most practical:

Frontend (Next.js)          → Vercel
Log collection API (FastAPI) → Railway
DB + Auth + Vector search    → Supabase (pgvector)

Supabase alone can handle a fair amount of API logic through Edge Functions, but for always-on, high-throughput workloads like log collection, Railway’s container-based approach is the better fit.

Neon is worth watching — now under Databricks, its AI affinity is growing, and it could eventually integrate with a log analytics pipeline. That said, the need to bring your own Auth and Storage makes Supabase the better choice for the initial phase.
